Old 16 Mile doublet 14k ring origin story
This beautiful ring has been sold but I just wanted to share how we bring these rare gems to you from our mines in Coober Pedy. We were on the Old 16 Mile field, a cavernous and frankly, slightly scary old mine as it was very rich and had been mined to a labyrinth of tunnels that were emptied out by my father in law and his partners several years ago.
This makes the mines very high and dries out the pillars making the ceilings unstable and susceptible to cave in.
In this video, we were wandering through and found a collapsed part of the old mine, which just happened to be on what we call a ‘slip’ this is a fault type on some fields that carries opal in the fault and out in front on the opal levels.
